If you have just bought or rented a used storage container, you may notice a lingering odor when you sniff inside. You really have no way of knowing what the container was used for before it got to you. It could have transported anything from fresh produce to frozen goods. And if the container had been sitting a while before you took ownership, this can exacerbate existing smells as well as introduce new ones from mildew and just stale air.
If you notice a foul smell in your container, don’t panic: read up on these tips on how to clean the inside of your container to eliminate odors.
1. Try Coffee Grounds
This is one of the easiest and cheapest methods of eliminating foul odors from any storage container. Pick up the largest container you can find of the cheapest coffee from the store. Sprinkle a layer of the grounds across the floor, then close the doors and let it sit for at least two days. The, open up the doors, sweep up the grounds and your odor should be gone. We hope you like the smell of coffee!
2. Use Odor Eliminator Bags
Another option is to buy odor eliminator bags, which are inexpensive, effective and all-natural. Just place a few odor eliminator bags throughout the container, let them sit for at least 24 hours, then check if the smell is gone. You can use such bags for up to three months if need be.
3. Give it a Good Power Washing
Sometimes all your container needs is a thorough cleaning. This will get off all the ground-in dirt and rust, as well as any lingering odors that may have come with them. Use regular warm water with a bit of dish soap added for a better clean.
4. Air it Out
If you have patience, you can open up the doors and windows and let the container air out on its own for a day or two. This option doesn’t cost you anything, but you have to make sure the container is secure and out of sight from would-be vandals.
5. Vinegar
Put some white vinegar in a spray bottle and spritz down the interior walls of the container. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a sponge or soft-bristled brush. Rinse with clean water and let dry.
6. Give it TLC
Now that you have removed the offensive odor, it’s important to stick to a regular cleaning and maintenance schedule so as to avoid odors in the future. You can do this by regularly cleaning the interior, letting it air out and making sure you don’t leave trash or food in the unit for any length of time.
